Notes for May 16, 2009

I've caught a summer cold. It started when I got a lung full of oak pollen last weekend and its developed into a head cold. Needless to say, I didn't work outside today and it only means that I am that much more behind. If I were feeling better I would have borrowed one of my brother's trucks and picked up some manure and then planted my tomatoes and peppers and cut the grass. Maybe I can convince my son in cutting the grass one day next week since he is finished college for the summer.

The dogwood has dropped about 95 percent of its flowers...time to plant tomatoes!

Notes for April 29, 2009

Thinned the radishes last night and today we are having some light rain. The dogwoods and the wisteria are in bloom and we turned off the AC.

Notes for August 8, 2008

Looks to be a gorgeous weekend weather wise and I hope to get some done outside. Even though if I plant now, I won't be harvesting until October, I want to plant another row of green beans. And of course some housekeeping as well (trim some bushes, pull out the dead daylily stalks, weeding, etc.)

In early September, I am planning on planting carrots again like last year. Hopefully this year I won't be as lazy and water them when needed (last year the carrots came out small, I think from the lack of water).

I did look again at that dogwood I transplanted and it does have some leaves that have grown to normal size.

Yesterday I also noticed that seven of my sunflower plants are in bloom. I hope to take some pictures of them, people don't believe me when I say my sunflowers are 8 feet tall.

Notes for August 7, 2008

I watered the veggie garden and some of my flower beds last night. My cucumbers in the shady side are doing much better than the ones that get more sun. The ones in the sun seem to be getting burned, I guess I'm not watering them enough.

While I was watering my flower beds, I also did some weeding. The funny thing was that some of the weeds were tomato and watermelon plants (not surprised since I throw the rotting tomatoes and the water melon rinds in the compost pile).

Earlier this spring I transplanted a Dogwood tree. I transplanted it when the leaves were still small. I guess I should have waited until the leaves were mature because the leaves stayed the same size. Last night I noticed from a distance that half of the leaves appear to be of normal size. I will have to check this out closer.

I purchased a large green Hosta late this spring and thought it was big enough to split. I wrote earlier that the smaller one died. Last night I noticed that the larger remaining plant was in bloom. It has three stalks with white flowers.

Notes for May 16, 2008

Its raining this morning but looks to be a nice weekend. Hopefully I can get over to my local horse farm tomorrow and get my annual supply of manure. I dig a two gallon hole for each of my tomato and pepper plants and mix in one gallon of manure (so my sandy soil holds moisture better).

My dogwood tree in my front yard has nearly lost all of its flower petals and according to some almanac I read previously, its now time to plant tomatoes.

Notes for May 6, 2008

Sorry that I have not written as often as I did in the past. I recently lost my job and found another and so life has been an adjustment.

I have onions, radish, spinach and green beans planted.

I have started another perennial flower bed.

I have had seven trees cut down in my back yard (all were dead from the gypsy moth damage).

I bought a red rhododendron (now I have to figure out where I am going to plant it.

I have transplanted a dogwood tree (3 ft high) and found two other small ones to possibly transplant.

About half of the perennials I bought last year lived through the winter. The Bee Balm has taken over its spot.

The grass seed I put down in late March is still waiting for the April showers (April was dryer than normal and so far so has May).
